Health Benefits of Chia Seeds + Favorite Recipes
I am so grateful for mother who taught me at a very young age how to live holistically–using natural healing and herbs and seeds, that we have been blessed so much with, for the benefit and health of our bodies. She was definitely onto something before everyone else was, which she learned from her mother. One of the things my mom did was give us kids chia seeds all the time when I was a child (we are talking in the 80s). She would throw it into tofu pancake batter (I wish she would remember that recipe. It was so good), fruit smoothies, bran muffins. We never knew they were in there! But chia seeds were always a staple in our kitchen. So as an adult, using chia seeds comes very natural. It’s something I take every day. I probably need to be better about sneaking it into my kids pancake batter, though. They need to also reap the health benefits of chia seeds, which are numerous.
One of the health benefits of chia seeds, and what it is most known by, is that it has the highest amount of omega-3’s than any other plant. It has even more omega-3’s than flax seed and salmon! From what my fitness sister tells me is that omega-3’s helps with weight loss and distributing the fat evenly in our bodies. Also omega-3’s is an essential fat that our body must have to help with cell membranes and hormones. So, chia seeds is right up there so make sure you take it every day! Remember to stay natural…it’s better to get your essential needs from real foods instead of a pill or vitamin. Chia seeds is also easier to digest then flax seeds, because they do not need to be ground up to get their full benefit and have a longer shelf life. They are also self sustaining, so that means no GMOs or pesticide. All organic! There are many more benefits to the seeds; protein, fiber, great for diabetics, energy and hydrating. I have an energy chia balls recipe below that are so good to eat in the afternoon when you need a little jump start to finish out the day.
So how should you incorporate chia seeds in your daily diet to reap the health benefits of chia seeds? It’s really quite easy! My mom actually soaks her chia seeds because they are hydrophilic. So she puts them in water for about 10 minutes before using. Or grind them up and put them in baked goods or pancake batter…no one will know! Or use as whole and throw into smoothies, yogurt, drinks, salads, even meat dishes to thicken up. I like to put a tablespoon of chia seeds when I make my overnight oats. You can find my overnight oats recipe over at HDS.
Make an energy drink by putting 2 tablespoons of chia seeds into coconut water or homemade lemonade and letting it sit for 10 minutes. It will become a gel consistency and an energy booster.
One of my favorite desserts is raw pudding it is SO good. I like to make a big batch and then eat it for dessert for the next couple days. Add fruit and you will be loving every bite without the guilty. And you will reap more health benefits of chia seeds.
Raw Chia Seed Pudding
1/4 cup of chia seeds
1 cup of coconut milk or almond milk
1/4 cup (or sweeten to taste) of honey or agave syrup
Add flavors like vanilla, cocoa powder, pureed fruit or citrus juices
Combined all together and stir. Refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours.
Need an afternoon booster? Or a healthy snack on the road? I like to make these chia energy balls and keep them on hand. When I head out the door and know I will be away for a few hours, I take a couple of these energy balls with me. So good, energy and healthy–all in a little ball.
No-Bake Healthy Chia Seed Energy Balls
1 cup oatmeal
2/3 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
1/2 cup almond butter
1 tablespoon of chia seeds
1/2 cup ground flax seed
1/4 cup of honey or agave
handful of cacao bites
Stir all the ingredients until mixed. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes. Once chilled, roll into 1″ diameter balls. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator. Enjoy up to a week.
Here are chia seeds I recommend.

DIY Painted White and Gold Furniture: Amy Howard at Home One Step Paint
We have had this Chinese cabinet since we first got married. It’s one of those furniture pieces that I’ve wanted to replace, but my husband is so attach to it (why does that happen to men??). We placed it in this corner off the kitchen because it’s quite functional–hiding our mail, random papers, keys and even a laptop. But it has been this dark, neglected piece that doesn’t really go with the rest of the kitchen decor and really looked misplaced. My kitchen is white and has a lot of windows, so I really want to lighten up the cabinet and glamorize it by painting it a white and gold furniture piece. I am in love with Worlds Away furniture like this cabinet and this so I felt like I could repaint my Chinese cabinet to achieve the look similar to a Worlds Away piece. After attending Amy Howard at Home paint workshop, I knew the One-Step Paint would be perfect for this DIY painted white and gold furniture project.
Here is the before:
I separated the top portion from the bottom portion by unscrewing a hinge on the back of the piece that held the two together. I wanted to paint the top portion of the cabinet white, so I chose the One Step Paint Bauhaus Buff. With the One Step, you don’t have to sand or put a primer on it. Prior to painting the top portion of the cabinet, I made sure to clean the piece with a degreaser cleaning spray , wiping down dust and grime. Then I painted the top portion with two coats of the One Step paint, allowing to dry approx 30 minutes between each coat. Make sure to apply an even coat. Do not apply too thick or leave puddles, as it could crack when drying.
- Helpful Tip: Make sure to paint your piece in a room with reasonable temperatures. If it’s cold outside, don’t paint in the garage! Temperature has an affect on any kind of paint.
- Helpful Tip: Make sure to shake and stir the One Step Paint. Leave it open for 15-20 minutes before using for a thicker paint.
With the bottom portion, I spray painted two coats of a gold metallic spray paint. The circle brass plate on the top portion was pretty worn and was loosing its luster. I wanted it to pop out more, so I covered the top portion and just spray painted the plate with the gold metallic.
Once the top and bottom pieces dried, I assembled them back together. Since the cabinet is used everyday, I wanted to seal the paint, and applied Amy Howard at Home Clear Wax. I decided to go with the clear wax because I didn’t want to change the color of the white and gold. I started by swirling a clean brush into the wax to load it up. Then using a scrap of cardboard, I off-loaded some of the wax from the brush by brushing it on the cardboard. This also helps to distribute the wax evenly throughout the brush bristles.
- HELPFUL TIP: Never go straight from the tin of wax to your piece. Always remove excess by swiping your brush across a piece of cardboard a few times.
I applied the clear wax on the One Step Paint and the gold metallic spray paint. Putting a wax over spray paint will help seal the spray paint from chipping and wearing off over time especially on furniture pieces. I applied the wax all over the piece by using gentle, whisking brushstrokes in a cross-hatch pattern. Allow to dry 45 minutes to an hour. After use a clean rag and gently buff the wax until there is a sheen on the surface.
I could of stopped there, but I felt like the gold metallic paint was looking flat.
So, to create depth and give it a rich gold metallic look, I used the dark antique wax. Using a bristle brush, I swirled wax to cover the tips of the bristles. You only want to add the dark antique wax to the areas on the piece that would show age—edges and places that would have been touched and worn more often. Using a small amount of wax, I applied lightly in a cross-hatched pattern. Allow to dry for 1 hour, then gently buff until there is a sheen on the surface.
Doesn’t the gold look so much better with the dark antique wax applied to it? What a difference! I’m so happy with the way my piece turned out! I added new acrylic knobs, and it is now ready to be used. The white brightens up that use-to-be dark corner. I’m so impressed with the waxes and how it makes the paint so much stronger and durable. And the One Step made this painting project so much easier since there was no sanding or priming. I’d say this DIY painted white and gold furniture project was a success!

Over the Knee boots Under $150: I’ve been on the search of reasonably priced over the knee boots that weren’t a fortune, and ones I can wear around town as a one of my winter basics. I finally found these ones from Steve Madden with a low heel and on sale, and are a perfect knock-off of these over the knee boots I am obsessed over. The Steve Madden boots are comfortable and one of the things I like is that they aren’t so high on my thigh. Many of the over the knee boots I found were just a little too extreme and hit too high that it was uncomfortable sitting down and only went with a few outfits. I paired these boots with skinny black pants and basic shirt. Perfect mom style for my lifestyle on the go. Take advantage of many of the boot sales going on. I have a feeling that over the knee boots are sticking around for a bit. These are perfect to add to your winter wardrobe and wear for next winter season!
I searched some of my favorite over the knee boots under $150. Many are on sale, so get them while they last!

This past weekend the weather was perfect. Fall is finally here. The leaves are changing colors, and the temperature has just the right amount of heat. Not too hot; not too cold. I wore this outfit on Sunday. It’s the perfect fall color and winter white outfit. I love the white skirt. It’s made from thick-knitted stretchy fabric, which will work well for tights and boots when the weather gets colder. The lacy top with a leather-trimmed detail edge is a fun autumn combination. Sticking with the lacy trend, but with a fall approach. This fall color top would look really cute with jeans and an army green jacket. The winter white skirt could be paired with a lacy black top or a chunky sweater.
Want a new pair of trendy sunglasses but without the price tag? I seriously love A.J. Morgan sunglasses like the ones I’m wearing. And if I lose them or they get sat on by a child, that is okay! Life happens. My heels are Belle by Sigerson Morrison (similar style). They are suede but with a wooden heel. A good transitional heel. I added options below since they are last year’s style. The earrings are the Quatra style, which also comes in a pearly white. What fall color and winter white outfit are your wearing?

Modern Task Lamps have been on my mind lately. Maybe because I’ve seen so many I like. Task lamps have come so far since the ones my grandparents had in their home. Now there are so many that have a sleek, minimalist style, and can enhance any desk with a modern functional look. I love this Target globe task lamp I recently picked up for my guest bedroom. It freshens up the room for a good price.
I am known to move furniture and decor around my house, so I like that the task lamp will look good on a simple desk or on top of a dresser. My modern task lamp is currently placed on top of a small drawer table that my neighbor gave me and I refinished in white. A framed Minted art, books and ceramic vase adds color and variation to gold lamp.
Here are other modern task lamps that I am crushing on.
Fur Vest and Everyday black dress: This fall season I am really into fur vest, and of course my everyday black dress that takes me from season to season. I’ve posted about this black dress before and wore it all summer and plan to wear it into the winter too. Every girl needs a simple black dress to wear and then accessorize with jewelry and fur vests! I’m also really excited about the minimalist jewelry I’m wearing and will be launching soon in my shop. I hope to have it available for holiday shopping!
- BB Dakota fur vest I’m wearing is warm, but still light weight so you don’t feel like you are wearing an animal. Here are some other similar styles: here, here and here
- My fringe boots are so comfortable and the perfect height. They are Jessica Simpson and I can’t find them online. But these Sam Edelman is very similar. You can still run your errands without your feet hurting. Looks good with jeans too. Similar styles are here and here.
- TopShop bag is big and slouchy. It’s got that boho chic look and I’m going to get good use out of it this cold season.
- My love for a new pair of sunglasses can make a rough day happy. But with kids and the abuse I put my sunglasses through I like it keep it cheap. These ones are only $24!

DIY Tassel Necklaces: We said goodbye to summer last week and are now back at school…still in our summer haze though. With school comes back-to-school shopping, and my girls love all the new clothes, shoes and accessories they want to buy. As a kid, one of my favorite things I enjoyed about going back to school was wearing new clothes and planning out my outfits for each day. I always liked to accessorize. A cute necklace with do that to any outfit. So we made some long tassel necklaces for my girls to wear with their new outfits. And now I want to put a tassel on just about everything!
All these craft supplies came from a hobby store (like Michaels or Hobby Lobby). I bought a bead box and the embroidery thread cost about 40 cents for each one so you can make a lot of tassel necklaces for just under $10!
To make the beaded necklace, cut the cord about twice as long as you’d like the length. Take the flexible needle and thread the cord in the hole. We made a knotted necklace, so you can string the bead and then tie a knot then string the bead and then a knot. Keep doing that until you get your desired length. We made the necklaces long enough so we just knotted the necklace off with a square knot. Or to make the necklace quicker, you can just string the beads on the cord, ending with a square knot. To attach the tassel, take another jump ring and secure the tassel on the necklace. Add as many tassels onto one necklace with a jump ring!
Make one for you and add multiple tassels to a simple long gold chain!
