Laundry Room Ideas for Renovation
Laundry is one of those never-ending household tasks, especially in a busy home like ours. With four kids, the washer and dryer are constantly running. We have wanted to renovate our laundry room for some time and finally decided to make the jump in the project. Our current laundry room just isn’t working as efficiently as it could. The room is located on our second floor, near all the bedrooms. I love how conveniently place it is in the house. But it is also small, no window and the way the cabinets are located, the space is not at it’s max capacity. So, we’ve decided to take on a renovation project to make the space more functional and, of course, give it a much-needed design refresh! I wanted to share some of our before pictures and our laundry room inspiration board. Creating a board always helps to envision the final design. So I always try to create one when I am renovating a room.

The Need for a Change
Our laundry room has served its purpose over the years, but it’s always felt a bit cramped and inefficient. There’s no counter space for folding, no where to hide the laundry basket, too many hanging racks, and the layout doesn’t maximize the space as well as it could. Since I spend so much time in there, I want it to be both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Here are some of my laundry room inspiration and design goals.

Our Design Goals
- Better Layout – We plan to move both upper cabinets together, right above the washer and dryer. To save money, we will use the current cabinets. They are a classic design that is in all of the rooms. I really like them so I don’t see the need to build new ones. We will add open shelving over the laundry room sink. This will maximize the wall space in the room.
- Maximize Space – We will remove the ledge in the floor and then move the washer and dryer right next to each other. This will maximize the space and open up an area where we can hide the laundry basket.
- Folding & Hanging Space – We will add a counter top over the washer and dryer for folding clothes. We will add a pull down/fold up hanging drying rack similar to this on the open space between the washer and dryer and the sink.
- Updated Design – I love a clean, coastal look that is already in our home, so we’re thinking of painting the cabinets Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray, which is a paint color that is through out our home. And then adding wallpaper.
The Process
We’re still finalizing all the details, but we’ve started looking at inspiration and materials. I’m drawn to coastal tones with classic New England style. I also want to make it fun and inviting. Lighting is another key element I want to improve, since the room doesn’t get much natural light. Check out my Laundry Room Pinterest Board for my inspiration.
Stay Tuned!
I’m excited to share this journey as we transform our laundry room into a space that works for our family and makes the never-ending chore of laundry just a little more enjoyable. I’ll be posting updates, including before-and-after photos and design choices along the way.
Have you renovated your laundry room? I’d love to hear what worked for you!
